From House to Home – Making the Move to SIL

Making the move to Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a big step – one filled with possibility, growth, and independence. But like any big change, it can come with a mix of excitement and nerves. Whether you’re just starting to explore your options or are already planning your move, here are some key things to keep in mind to help you feel prepared and supported every step of the way.

Preparing for the Transition

Every journey starts with a plan. Transitioning to SIL is about more than just finding a place to live – it’s about building a life that works for you. Start by thinking about what you want your daily life to look like. What kind of routines do you enjoy? What supports will help you feel comfortable and confident? Having a clear idea of your needs, preferences, and goals will make the process much smoother.

Tip: Keep a journal, vision board, or chat with a trusted friend or support coordinator to help put your ideas into words.

Choosing the Right Provider

Finding the right SIL provider can make all the difference. Look for a team that truly listens, takes the time to understand your goals, and sees you as the unique individual you are. Your provider should offer flexibility, consistency, and a strong sense of community.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions! It’s okay to want to know how things work, who your support team will be, and what kind of lifestyle you can expect in your new home.

Getting to Know Your Housemates, Home & Support Team

If you’ll be sharing your SIL home with others, meeting your housemates early can help ease any anxiety and build friendly connections from the start. Every home has its own vibe – and your comfort is key.

It’s also important to feel connected to your Support Workers. After all, they’ll be by your side as you navigate daily life, learn new skills, and work toward your goals. Take time to get to know your team and communicate openly about your preferences.

Setting Up Your Goals & Preparing for Success

What does success look like to you? Maybe it’s learning to cook your favourite meals, taking public transport independently, or simply feeling proud of your space.

Setting meaningful goals gives you a clear sense of direction and purpose. Work with your Support Coordinator and team to create a plan that breaks big dreams into small, achievable steps – and don’t forget to celebrate every win along the way!

The Role of Your Support Network

You’re never doing this alone. Family, friends, Support Coordinators, therapists, and even your current carers can all be part of your transition to SIL. This support network can help you prepare emotionally, advocate for your needs, and cheer you on as you settle into your new home.

Leaning on your network doesn’t mean you’re not independent – it means you’re supported, valued, and surrounded by people who want to see you thrive.
