What’s Included in SIL and Why Allara Does It Differently

Supported Independent Living, redefined: How we build independence, community, and purpose through SIL.

We Just Do SIL

Allara made the decision early on to do one thing — and to do it well. We specialise in Supported Independent Living (SIL), offering focused expertise and exceptional care for people with a range of support needs, including psychosocial challenges, complex behaviours, high physical support, and medical needs.

We provide SIL in our Onsite Shared Supports (OSS) settings, creating purpose-driven environments that empower people to live with dignity, choice, and control.

Our Values

  1. Nothing about you, without you
  2. We show up
  3. We give & give back, just because
  4. Come as you are… Unapologetically YOU
  5. We’ve got you… You are now our family
  6. We empower and inspire potential
  7. We are shaping the way

What is Supported Independent Living?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a type of NDIS support designed to help participants live as independently as possible, while still receiving the day-to-day assistance they need. This can range from personal care and cooking to medication management and building routines.

At Allara, SIL isn’t just about getting through the day — it’s about building a life filled with meaning, autonomy, and connection.

What’s Included in SIL?

SIL can include:

  • Personal Care – Showering, dressing, hygiene
  • Meal Preparation – Cooking, planning, nutrition
  • Medication Support – Safe administration and reminders
  • Domestic Assistance – Cleaning, laundry, shopping
  • Skill Building – Budgeting, transport, time management
  • Transport Support – When included in your NDIS plan, we can assist with getting to work, appointments, and community activities

Each of these supports is designed not just to assist, but to build confidence. We focus on empowering participants to do more for themselves, one step at a time.

Building Confidence, Growth, and Independence

We believe that SIL is most powerful when it helps people grow. That’s why our teams focus on:

  • Daily skill development through supported routines
  • Building confidence through repetition and success
  • Complementing allied health plans in everyday life (e.g., using OT strategies in the kitchen or bathroom)

“It’s in the little wins — cooking your first meal, learning to budget, remembering your meds — that independence is built.”

Choice, Control & Personal Growth

SIL settings should feel like your home. That means:

  • You choose your routines
  • You guide your support
  • Your goals are reviewed and updated regularly, not just once a year

We treat every participant as an individual, not a diagnosis. Personal growth means having the freedom to change your mind, explore new interests, and live your life with autonomy.

Creating a Supportive Home Environment

Our SIL homes are designed to feel like just that — home. They’re safe, supportive, and inclusive. Whether living alone or with housemates, participants can expect:

  • A welcoming environment that promotes safety and comfort
  • Supportive staff who treat you with dignity
  • Spaces that reflect your personality and preferences

🐾 Yes, we’re pet-friendly. Because your home isn’t complete without your best friend. 🐶

Whether it’s a dog, cat, or something fluffier — we welcome your furry companions as part of the family.

Community Integration & Social Connection

We encourage social and community participation wherever possible. From shared dinners to cultural outings and everything in between, participants are supported to:

  • Connect with their local community
  • Build relationships with housemates and neighbours
  • Attend social events, hobbies, or activities

This fosters inclusion, wellbeing, and a genuine sense of belonging.

What is Onsite Shared Supports?

Onsite Shared Supports (OSS) is Allara’s innovative model for delivering 24/7 care while promoting independence. Here’s how it works:

  • 10 SDA units are located within a mainstream residential building
  • An onsite carer unit and nurse call system is available 24/7
  • Support is shared, but care plans are individualised

The concierge model means participants can keep their 1:1 supports through their chosen providers during the day, and rely on Allara’s concierge team for ad-hoc or planned assistance when needed.

Support can be accessed in many ways: via phone, text, assistive tech, pendants, or Google Home.

What Concierge Support Can Help With:

  • Emergencies (medical, environmental)
  • Medication and high-intensity supports
  • Domestic tasks like cleaning, cooking, or watering plants
  • Booking appointments and reminders
  • Transfers, personal care, and manual handling
  • Emotional support and companionship
  • Receiving parcels while you’re out

Concierge support is there when you need it, and invisible when you don’t.

Benefits of the Concierge Model

  • Cost-effective: Just $1484.10/week, split across participants — about one-tenth the cost of 1:1 24/7 support
  • Responsive: We aim to respond within 15 minutes
  • Flexible: Use it as much or as little as you like
  • Private and Independent: Live in your own apartment, without carers in your space
  • Social: Monthly building-wide events build connection and community
  • Integrated: SDA units are peppered throughout a mainstream building, fostering inclusion

The Role of a SIL Manager

Behind every successful SIL home is a great SIL Manager. They are responsible for:

  • Fostering a positive, values-based culture
  • Coaching and mentoring support staff
  • Reviewing goals and routines with participants
  • Managing safety, compliance, and operational quality
  • Advocating for participant voices

“Our SIL Managers aren’t just roster-fillers — they’re culture-setters, problem-solvers, and participant advocates.”

Pricing Transparency: How DSP & CRA Are Used

In a SIL setting, your rent, utilities, groceries, and shared expenses are covered through your:

  • 75% of Disability Support Pension (DSP)
  • 100% of Commonwealth Rent Assistance (CRA)

This covers:

  • Rent and bills
  • Basic groceries and shared essentials
  • Internet and household needs

We’re transparent about costs and always happy to walk through the numbers with you or your family.

What Sets Allara Apart?

We’re not a generalist provider. We just do SIL — and we do it well. We collaborate with SDA partners like My Life Housing (and others) to ensure separation of roles and avoid conflicts of interest. Participants always have the right to give feedback safely, and we’re proud to have been brought in to take over underperforming SIL services in the past.

At the heart of everything we do is the participant. Their voice, their goals, their life.

Onsite Shared Supports is a modern, person-centred way to deliver SIL. It blends flexibility, efficiency, and real human connection — without compromising on safety, independence, or choice.
